The original Ladies' Work Society Coverlet was made between 1875 and 1899. Its maker is unknown.
Held in The Quilters' Guild Collection, the coverlet features a background of blue and off-white linen, with appliquéd motifs created from printed dress fabrics. The appliqué edges are decorated with embroidery silks, while the word Industria is embroidered in satin stitch at its centre.
A surviving woven label identifies the Ladies' Work Society, based at 21 Sloane Street, London.
Established in 1875, the Society was associated with the wider Arts and Crafts movement and provided employment opportunities for women skilled in needlework.
Anne's Hearts & Paisley design offers a fresh interpretation of this historic coverlet, celebrating the creativity of its original maker while encouraging today's quilters to explore traditional techniques.
Every purchase from Quiltworks supports the work of The Quilters' Guild, helping to preserve, research and share Britain's quilting heritage.
